A River Boy

I'll Go to Hell Free

My pap tore me down and the town looked right past me. They wanted to civilize me into something I ain't, or else punish me for being what I was. Then I found the river, and I found Jim - a man the world said was worth nothing, who turned out to be the truest family I ever had. Out on that raft, we was just two people looking out for each other. I learned that what folks think of you ain't the same as what you really are. Sometimes doing right means going against everything you been taught. I figured I'd go to hell for helping Jim, and I said all right then, I'll go to hell. That was the most free I ever felt.
